Lizi Stepanova, a 10-year-old girl, faced a severe spinal deformity that significantly impacted her health. Although her mother had not noticed any abnormalities in Lizi’s posture until she was eight years old, the condition rapidly progressed, reaching a 21-degree curvature.
“Lizi became easily fatigued, frequently complained of lower back pain, and lacked energy. Initially, we pursued conservative treatments, including massages, exercises, and a corrective corset, but none proved effective. Due to her young age, spinal surgery was initially discouraged, as it is typically not recommended for children under 11 or 12 years old,” recalls her mother.
Lizi underwent a comprehensive evaluation at the Children’s Health Center of Iashvili Hospital, where specialists confirmed the rapid progression of her condition. Orthopedic traumatologist and surgeon Irakli Vardzukashvili determined that, despite her young age, surgical intervention was imperative. By the time of the surgery, Lizi’s spinal curvature had reached 65–70 degrees, necessitating a complex, one-time corrective procedure, as multiple surgeries are not advisable in such cases.
The operation was performed using advanced surgical techniques, employing an internal correction device to straighten the spine. Thanks to this intervention, Lizi now leads a healthy, active life, free from pain or physical limitations.
