Doctors at M. Iashvili Children’s Central Hospital successfully performed another challenging operation, saving the life of an 8-year-old patient. The girl was transferred from Kareli Hospital in Tbilisi after falling from a tree and sustaining severe injuries caused by a metal scraper.
"I will never forget that shocking day. When I returned home from work, I found a horrifying scene. My little girl, literally attached to a metal scraper. Despite the magnitude of the trauma, she never lost consciousness. She kept repeating, 'Get the iron out of my body quickly.' It was she who gave me the hope to fight for her life," recalls the young patient’s mother.
The metal scraper had pierced the upper third of her thigh, passing through the groin, minor pelvis, liver, kidney projection areas, and stopping near the ninth rib. The attending surgeon, Mikheil Kalatozishvili, remembers that the girl lying on the stretcher was a difficult sight to see. მიხეილ კალატოზიშვილი იხსენებს, რომ საკაცეზე მწოლიარე გოგონა მძიმე სანახავი იყო.
"We performed the surgery through four small incisions. The surgical procedure was quite complicated, but what was even more remarkable was that the metal scraper did not damage the kidney, liver, bladder, and most importantly, the integrity of the arteries was not compromised. Together with Malkhaz Kartozia, we formed a subcutaneous tunnel and carefully removed the foreign body from the patient," says the pediatric surgeon, Mikheil Kalatozishvili.
The girl is now fully recovered and has returned to her normal life.
