The Story of a 3-Year-Old Girl Cured of Leukemia

Another victory against leukemia has been achieved at M. Iashvili Children’s Central Hospital, where doctors successfully cured 3-year-old Mariam of a severe oncological disease.

The young patient was urgently admitted to the hospital with acute symptoms, including difficulty walking, fever, and unexplained bruising. Initial tests revealed the presence of several cancerous cells in her peripheral blood, raising concerns about a possible blood malignancy. Seeking the best possible care, Mariam’s parents decided to take her to Turkey for treatment. However, the experience proved to be emotionally overwhelming for both mother and child. At the family’s request, Mariam returned to Georgia, once again under the care of Iashvili Hospital’s dedicated medical team.

"Our team immediately mobilized all resources. After conducting a thorough bone marrow examination, our suspicions were confirmed—acute lymphoblastic leukemia was diagnosed. The only chance for Mariam’s survival was a six-month course of polychemotherapy," recalls Dr. Asmat Shengelia, Head of the Onco-Hematology Department.

Throughout the challenging treatment journey, psychologist Tamar Lomtadze worked closely with Mariam and her mother, helping them cope with the immense physical and emotional distress. Despite her young age and the intense pain, Mariam bravely listened to her doctors and fought for her life every step of the way.

The battle against leukemia was filled with hardships and obstacles, but Mariam ultimately emerged victorious. Today, she is one of the 1,000 children who have successfully defeated this life-threatening disease thanks to the expertise and dedication of Iashvili Hospital’s medical team.
