For the first time in Georgia, a one-year-old child underwent reconstructive cranioplasty at M. Iashvili Children’s Central Hospital. The infant was admitted with a severe cranial deformity, and diagnostic tests revealed premature cranial suture ossification in the early stages. The child was diagnosed with a complex form of craniosynostosis, a congenital condition in which the sutures between the skull bones close prematurely, before the brain has fully developed.
In this case, the skull deformation was causing a reduction in intracranial volume, leading to increased pressure on the brain. Such conditions often result in delayed psycho-motor development and pose a high risk of secondary brain damage.
Given the severity of the condition, neurosurgeon Vladimir Tsikarishvili decided to proceed with reconstructive cranioplasty. Despite the high risk of complications, the complex neurosurgical procedure was successfully completed. The patient was discharged in stable condition, and follow-up examinations have shown positive results.
