A 4-year-old girl was admitted to M. Iashvili Children’s Central Hospital with symptoms of drowsiness, persistent fatigue, and increased intracranial pressure. Concerned about the severity of her condition, doctors conducted a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, which revealed a large, aggressively growing tumor located in the brainstem. Tumors in this region are considered among the most complex and high-risk cases in neurosurgery, as they are directly connected to vital functions such as breathing, heart rate, and motor control.
Given the tumor’s location and size, the surgical team faced an immense challenge. During the high-risk neurosurgical procedure, it became clear that the tumor had infiltrated the brainstem, making its removal extremely delicate. Despite the significant risk of complications, neurosurgeon Vladimir Tsikarishvili and his team performed a meticulously precise excision, successfully removing the tumor from the brainstem’s critical functional areas.
Following the surgery, the postoperative recovery period proceeded without complications. The young patient responded well to treatment, gradually regaining strength and showing significant improvement. She has since been discharged home in a stable condition.
