Sochi… A seemingly ordinary, sunny summer day and a young couple walking on the street with their 3-year-old child… Nothing unusual in this scenario until a car appears, putting the child’s life in danger… That’s how the little patient ended up first in an ambulance, and then in Sochi hospital.
As the child’s mother recalls, upon arriving at the clinic, she prematurely celebrated the test results and the negative response regarding fractures: “I breathed a sigh of relief, but as it turned out, a real nightmare was ahead.” We were facing the risk of losing his foot,” recalls the young woman.
The little patient from Abkhazia was transferred to Tbilisi, to M. Iashvili Children’s Central Hospital. He had multiple traumatic injuries to the foot tendons and soft tissues, and his condition was worsening with fever.
As pediatric orthopedist and plastic surgeon Tinatin Antadze recalls, amputation of the foot was discussed, but the doctors spared no effort and developed the right treatment strategy: “First, we began removing necrotic tissue and performed vacuum therapy. We saw the results immediately and continued the treatment. Over time, the soft tissues became viable, and the patient was prepared for skin grafting,” states Tinatin Antadze.
The skin transplantation was also successfully performed. After a month of treatment, the family returned to Abkhazia. As the child’s mother says, all problems are in the past, and a new, colorful chapter of life has begun.
This amazing story of preserving a 3-year-old’s foot is just one of the many incredible cases that Evex’s large-scale project, “Life Ambassadors,” has gathered in various nominations. The medical case and the team of doctors (Tinatin Antadze, Tamar Gikorashvili) are nominated in the “Team of the Year” category.
