Asmat Shengelaia DMSc, Professor

Doctor of Medical Sciences, TSU Professor Asmat Shengelaia is a leading pediatric oncohematologist in the country with 47 years of work experience, who heads the oncohematology department at Iashvili Children’s Hospital.

She graduated from TSU’s Faculty of Pediatrics, after which she completed clinical residency and postgraduate studies in pediatric oncohematology. In 1982, she defended her candidate dissertation (Moscow) and was awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Medicine. In 1998, with her next doctoral dissertation, she obtained the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences. Since 2006, she has also been a professor at TSU’s Hematology Department.

Asmat Shengelaia completed clinical training in Germany, at the university clinics of Frankfurt and Freiburg. She also advanced her qualifications at leading children’s hospitals in the West.

She is the President of the Association of Pediatric Hematologists and Oncohematologists of Georgia, an expert in oncohematology for the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia and the National Academy of Georgia. Her name is associated with 45 scientific works, 3 national guidelines, and 2 monographs (Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphomas in Childhood, Acute Leukemias in Childhood).

Asmat Shengelaia is a laureate of the National Prize of Georgia and holder of a scientific grant from the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. In 2017, she was awarded a UN honorary certificate for scientific achievements in the field of medicine.
