Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor, Nana Tskhakaia is a pediatrician with 50 years of work experience, a pediatric pulmonologist and phthisiologist, who leads the pediatric direction in the Department of Respiratory Medicine. Her professional career has been associated with Iashvili Children’s Clinic since 1976.
She graduated from the Faculty of Pediatrics at Tbilisi State Medical University. She completed her clinical residency in Phthisiology at the TSMU Department of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, and studied pediatrics in her postgraduate studies. In 1988, she defended her candidate dissertation on bacterial destructions of the lungs in children and became a Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 2004, she defended her doctoral dissertation on the pathogenesis of childhood tuberculosis and was awarded the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences.
From 2006, she was an assistant at the Pediatric Department of the Medical University, and from 2012 – an Associate Professor of the Pulmonology Department at “Aieti”. Since 2020, she has been the Head of the Pulmonology Department and a Full Professor. At the same time, since 2024, she has been a visiting professor of the Phthisiology Department at Caucasus International University. Nana Tskhakaia has enhanced her qualifications in various Western countries at different times, including the USA, at the Allergy-Pulmonology Department of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She is:
• A member of Georgian Pediatric, Respiratory, Phthisiologists and Pulmonologists Associations;
• Co-chair of the “Tuberculosis and Respiratory Infections” working group of the Georgian Respiratory Association;
• A member of the European Respiratory Association;
• A member of the Council of the Georgian Academy of Pediatrics;
• A member of the Editorial Board of the Georgian Respiratory Journal;
• A member of the Editorial Board of the “Georgian Pediatrician” journal;
• Author of the residency program in Pediatric Phthisiology-Pulmonology;
• Local supervisor of residency programs in Pediatrics and Pediatric Phthisiology;
Nana Tskhakaia is the author of more than 50 scientific papers and an expert and reviewer of dissertation works. Her name is associated with the national clinical practice guideline for the management of tuberculosis in children (co-author) and the treatment of multisystem inflammatory syndrome caused by the new coronavirus (co-author).
She is an invited speaker at many international congresses, including Respiratory Association Congresses (2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024); speaker at the Congresses of Allergology and Clinical Immunology of Georgia (2023, 2024).
