Lizi Stefanova is a 10-year-old adolescent who had a complex spinal deformity. Although her mother hadn’t noticed anything unusual on the girl’s body until she was 8, one day the deformity became easily noticeable – the curvature reached 21 degrees.
“The child would get tired easily, complained of back pain and lack of energy. Initially, we tried conservative treatment methods. We were prescribed massages, exercises, a corset… but there were no results. Lizi’s age was also a factor to consider, as spinal surgery is not recommended for adolescents under 11-12 years,” recalls the young patient’s mother. Lizi underwent comprehensive examinations at Iashvili Hospital’s Children’s Health Center. Following diagnostics, orthopedic traumatologist, attending physician and surgeon Irakli Vardzukashvili made the decision to proceed with surgical treatment. According to him, the condition was progressing so rapidly that, despite her age, a complex, single-stage spinal operation (requiring no repeat surgery) became necessary. Before the surgical intervention, the spinal deformation angle had reached 65-70 degrees. The operation was performed using modern approaches. Posterior spinal tension was implemented using internal correction instruments. Today, little Lizi continues to live a full life without discomfort.
