Iashvili Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in the country that provides inpatient services to patients aged 0-18 years in pediatric oncology and oncohematology,. All types of solid tumor treatments are performed, and along with the country’s leading Georgian specialists, when necessary, a team of Western doctors is involved.
The main priority of the department is a multidisciplinary approach. Each patient’s case is discussed in a consilium format involving a team of clinical oncologists, radiation oncologists, chemotherapists, hematologists, surgeons, radiologists and pathologists. The following inpatient diagnostic services are available:
- Blast cell immunophenotyping (using latest generation flow cytometer);
- Bone marrow function and trephine biopsy;
- Cytomorphological and cytochemical studies;
- Molecular and genetic testing (by PCR);
- Minimal residual disease detection (MRD);
The department covers the full spectrum of pediatric oncology services. These include:
- Clinical oncology services (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy);
- Radiation oncology – various types of radiation therapy indicated for stopping tumor cell growth while maintaining healthy cell function;
- Oncological surgery – surgical treatment for malignant and certain benign tumors;
Since 1995, the department has been treating acute leukemia following the European-recognized BFM protocol, which increases the chance of complete recovery in 70% of patients. All patients with leukemia receive two years of follow-up treatment (maintenance therapy) completely free of charge.
