The Pediatric Transplantology Department is the only one in Georgia, offering powerful liver and kidney transplantation services to children and adolescents without leaving the country. The department also performs surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the liver, pancreas and biliary tract.
The department is highly developed and keeps pace with all modern challenges in the field . With today’s surgical technologies and achievements, the highly qualified team of transplantologists and surgeons has successfully managed many complex cases. These include liver and kidney transplants for patients under one year of age and weighing up to 10 kg–.
Liver transplantation can be performed for the following conditions:
- Cirrhosis;
- Tumors that do not spread outside the liver (HCC);
- Certain tumors that spread slowly in the liver (neuroendocrine tumors);
- Acute liver failure;
- Certain parasitic diseases similar to alveolar cystosis;
- Certain congenital metabolic and hematological diseases;
(tyrosinemia, Wilson’s disease, familial hypercholesterolemia type I etc.) - Severe post-traumatic liver injuries;
Kidney transplantation for diseases causing kidney failure, in most cases, can be performed in all age groups. Kidney transplantation is recommended for the following conditions:
- Congenital anomalies (aplasia, hypoplasia);
- Cystic kidney diseases (polycystic kidney disease);
- Glomerulonephritis (MPGN, RPGN and etc.);
- Hereditary disorders (Alport syndrome, Fabry disease, etc.);
- Tubulointerstitial nephritis;
- Vesicoureteral reflux;
- Neurogenic bladder;
- Vascular diseases (nephrosclerosis, HUS, TTP etc.);
- Kidney stones;
