Iashvili Children&#8217;s Central Hospital successfully performed another extremely complex operation and saved the life of an 8-year-old patient. The girl was transferred to Tbilisi from Kareli hospital after she fell from a tree and suffered severe injuries from a metal spiral. &#8220;I will never forget this shocking day. When I returned home from work, I encountered a horrific scene. I saw my little girl, literally impaled on a metal spiral. Despite such severe trauma, she never lost consciousness for a moment. She kept repeating, &#8216;Please remove this metal from my body quickly.&#8217; It was her strength that gave me hope to fight for her life,&#8221; recalls the young patient&#8217;s mother.        <br\/>The metal spiral penetrated the girl&#8217;s upper third of the thigh. It passed through the perineal area, small pelvis, liver and kidney projection areas, and stopped at the ninth rib. The patient&#8217;s treating surgeon, Mikheil Kalatozishvili, recalls that the girl lying on the stretcher was a difficult sight to see. &#8220;We performed the surgery with 4 small incisions. The surgical manipulation proved quite challenging, but what was even more remarkable was that the metal spiral hadn&#8217;t damaged the kidney, liver, bladder, and most importantly, the arterial integrity remained intact. Together with Dr. Malkhaz Kartozia, we created a subcutaneous tunnel and removed the foreign body from the patient with maximum caution,&#8221; says pediatric surgeon Mikheil Kalatozishvili.
